Day 1 (Friday) Introductory Avalanche Awareness Course: We’ll focus on the basics of transceiver search, companion rescue techniques, plus a bit of avalanche theory, and a little bit of terrain identification. Most of this course will be run around the lodge, so touring gear is not required, but your own beacon/probe/shovel set is highly recommended. NZSSI does have this for rent if required (refer rentals page).

Day 2 (Saturday) Avalanche Awareness and a tour: (PREREQUISITE Previous Avalanche course or Day 1). Today we’ll do a brief review of rescue, then focus on safe travel techniques, avalanche slope identification, freeriding in avalanche terrain (all inbounds at Temple Basin), and possibly build some emergency shelters. This day is much more weather dependent, be we will aim to get out on a tour so your own splitboard & skins (touring skis also welcome) are required as is a basic idea of how they work (come on Friday and ask around if you need help!). Snowshoes are available for rent if necessary. Beacon/probe/shovel and a backpack are also required on this day.
